How would you set up software assets which license expires after a year and needs to be renewed by the customer? Notification to customer and tech would be good.
Use the Enable Expiration Alerts which is under Setup > Assets > Options. When this is enabled, e-mail alerts are sent to the specified tech for the following Asset expirations: support contract, warranty and lease. You set up the support contract expiration in each of the assets. For warranty and lease you set that up under Setup > Assets > Types > Warranty Types / Lease Types.
Hi Phillip, thanks for your response. It helps to conceptually clear things up, however, as all too often, reality apears just one step removed.
I'm running WHD 11.0.7, and Warranty and Lease have been separated (two different tabs under Setup > Assets > Types). When I create a new asset I only see a Warranty drop-down option, no lease option. This may just be semantics, but software has no warranty ... I can see the license being interpreted as a lease though. How do I get Lease options on assets?
Lease Types are associated with Purchase Orders. To use the Lease type, you will have to make a Purchase Order of Type "Lease" and assign the asset to that Purchase Order. It's a bit confusing but it will make sense.
